2 Seconds

The other night I was watching part of The Cell, much to the displeasure of my couchmate, who really hates/is afraid of that movie. Though I think the movie is kind of visually interesting in a sort of old-creepy-album-cover-art sort of way, the the only thing worth watching in that movie is a two minute long scene completely devoid of gore or effects. It’s a scene between Jennifer Lopez (when she was at least pretending to be an actual actress) and Vince Vaughn (during that small post-Jurrasic Park II window when he tried to be a non-comedic actor) sitting outside on a bench talking about an old court case he worked on. It’s unevenly directed and Lopez’s reations to Vaughn are a little funky, but there is this 2 second moment when Vaughn says, “Yeah, I’m sure,” then looks uncomfortable and taps his cigarette that has more authenticity in it than the entire rest of the movie. It’s sort of ironic that in a movie where every gory detail of the villan’s inner throughts are florildly displayed, the only emotionally effecting moment is the least forthcoming. I haven’t seen that movie since it came out and yet, I remembered that scene. At this point I have seen so many movies that are all talk or all action and no subtlty, I really remember a moment of cinematic emotional beliavablity as a tiny speck of a good movie trapped in a bad one. Trapped just like dinasaur DNA in amber.
